Kilauea, perhaps the most active volcano on earth, erupts every day making new desert landscape. The volcanic island of Hawaii has the biggest and most active volcanoes in the world. All of the volcanoes in Hawaii are shield volcanoes. The reason why is it is made on a hot spot. A hot spot is a large chamber of magma, usually far away from a plate. As the plate moves, the hot spot moves. Surprisingly the volcano still sits on the same spot its been at for several years now. The location is Latitude 19*25'16"N Longitude 155*17'12"W. The lava shoots from small vents and the main caldera. A caldera is like a large drop that goes down a hundred or so feet and the inside is mainly flat. The closest populated area with permanent residents is the Kilauea military camp in Kuristown. Usually the volcano does not shoot lava at populated areas, only forests and the desert. But the eruption since 1983 has destroyed 189 homes in all. Nobody in history has reportedly died from Kilauea.

Five interesting facts about Kilauea:
-People can do helicopter and boat tours around Kilauea.
-Lava can shoot high in the air causing dangerous aviation conditions.
-The subdivision where most homes were destroyed was Royal Garden subdivision because it was in the flow field.
-The Pu'u'O'o crater launches out 870 tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day.
-There are earthquakes even though the nearest plate is thousands of miles away.
